Poland urges to speed up army modernization amid Ukraine peace talks

(MENAFN) Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said Warsaw must keep accelerating its armed forces’ modernization “regardless of what happens” in current diplomatic efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine, according to reports.

Speaking after weekend meetings in Geneva involving Ukrainian, US, and European representatives discussing a proposed American peace outline, Kosiniak-Kamysz cautioned that any progress at the negotiating table should not slow Poland’s defense buildup.
“We must arm ourselves anyway… I believe that acceleration will be necessary… even more, even sooner,” he said.

Poland remains one of NATO’s highest spenders on defense, continuing to procure new military systems and grow its force structure amid persistent regional security threats.

Kosiniak-Kamysz referenced comments from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who met in Geneva with Andriy Yermak, the Ukrainian president’s chief of staff. He described Rubio’s remarks as “a much more positive signal than the reports regarding the peace plan itself.”

Rubio had characterized his talks with Yermak as “the most productive and meaningful” discussions so far, noting that both sides made “good progress.”

Following the Geneva meeting, Kyiv and Washington said they had completed work on a “refined peace framework,” emphasizing that any agreement “must fully uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty and deliver a sustainable and just peace.”

Despite these developments, Kosiniak-Kamysz stressed that Poland cannot rely on a rapid diplomatic breakthrough.

“Whatever the outcome, we must continue strengthening our defense,” he said.
