NATO on Brink of Launching Arctic Sentry Mission

(MENAFN) The NATO alliance stands on the brink of launching a critical Arctic operation as preparations reach their concluding phase, driven by heightened Russian and Chinese maneuvers in the polar region, the bloc's senior European military official revealed Monday.

US Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, serving as NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, disclosed the development during an official Luxembourg visit, where discussions took place with Defense Minister Yuriko Backes and Chief of Defense Steve Thull, media reported.

Addressing media following the consultations, Grynkewich confirmed the alliance approaches completion of operational blueprints for "Arctic Sentry"—an initiative designed to bolster NATO's Arctic footprint. He emphasized deployment has not yet commenced.

The commander indicated he anticipated receiving additional mission parameters from NATO's Joint Force Command in Norfolk, Virginia, on Tuesday, suggesting a public declaration could materialize within days should all prerequisites align.

Grynkewich also reinforced Washington's unwavering dedication to NATO's mutual defense provision, Article 5, characterizing the pledge as "ironclad." No evidence suggests the US intends to diminish its alliance obligations, he noted, underscoring American efforts to preserve NATO as a robust military coalition.

Regarding Ukraine, Grynkewich dismissed demilitarization as viable while hostilities persist, characterizing conditions as challenging amid winter weather and relentless Russian infrastructure assaults. Though the US has re-established direct channels with Russia, any subsequent political measures remain subject to governmental decision-making, he added.
